What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a developmentally responsive approach to counseling that helps children express thoughts, feelings, and experiences through play rather than words. For many children, play is their natural language—and through it, they can communicate things they may not yet have the words to explain.

  • Emotional expression is accepted without judgment

  • Limits are set only when necessary for safety

  • Children are supported in understanding the consequences of choices in a calm and predictable way

Another powerful form of play-based therapy we use is Sandtray Therapy, which can be especially helpful for adolescents and adults as well as children.

In Sandtray Therapy, clients use miniature figures, objects, and symbols to create scenes in a sand tray. This process allows thoughts and emotions to emerge visually and symbolically, often bypassing the limitations of language.

Sandtray Therapy can support:

  • Exploring emotions that feel difficult to put into words

  • Increasing self-awareness and insight

  • Understanding internal conflict or relational patterns
